Rui Xu presents
The Dethroning of Divine Beasts-
A Sequel to the Classic of Mountains and Seas

An Art | Fashion | Dance | Performance experience
Commissioned by Christie’s, London

Chinese fashion designer and contemporary artist Rui Xu responds to the climate change through her new commission at London Christie’s

London, May 2019. From Olafur Eliasson’s centuries-old blocks of ice outside the Tate Modern last year, to the possible Banksy mural at Marble Arch supporting the Extinction Rebellion protests in London, artists’ responds to the climate change are growing. Leading Chinese fashion designer and contemporary artist Rui Xu will present her latest cross-disciplinary performance commissioned by the Christie’s on May 13th. Combining fashion design, painting, choreography and music, The Dethroning of Divine Beasts - A Sequel to the Classic of Mountains and Seas, will visualize the delicacy of the divinity of nature and convey her statement on the environment.

Drawn upon Classics of Mountains and Seas, the major source of Chinese mythology from 3rd Century BC to 2nd Century AD, XU tells the story of seven divine beasts, residing in an ancient and legendary realm: White Marsh, Torch Dragon, Chimera, Chenghuang, Water Unicorn, Nine-Tailed Fox and Pale Deer of Flood. These once-exalted and powerful creatures, formed as both gods and beasts, are terrified to discover the loss of their magical powers as they are transported to the mundane world of modern city life. This three-act performance is aimed to revitalise the central question of how human activity impacts the natural world and the essential need to reflect and react right now
As a fashion designer and contemporary artist grown up in China’s Xinjiang province, with breath-taking natural scenery of deserts and lakes, Xu has always been responsive to the environmental issues revisiting environmental theme over the past years. In 2016, Xu was invited by the Animal Ball – London's inspirational and philanthropic tribute to the Animal Kingdom. Xu created a series of unique animal masks inspired by Père David’s deer to highlight the plight of wildlife and to fundraise the international NGO Elephant Family, which protects the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild; A year later, the V&A museum commissioned Xu to present a cross disciplinary, poetic and poignant performance - Sky in Their Eye: The Antelope in a Vanishing Landscape, in the magnificent Raphael Gallery, to shine a spotlight on the consequences of human’s continued destruction and intimidation of animal habitats.

With such intricate approach, Xu’s new work at the Christie’s will lead the audience on a journey from the magical to the mundane, to witness how the divinity of nature disappears because of the short-sighted activity of mankind. “Though it is almost unavoidable that we exploit, we construct, we consume and we waste, all I wish is that never forget human being is fundamentally a natural being. At the very least, we must slow down and make a change in our daily life.”

Inspired by the mythical creatures from the Dizang Studio Jade Collection, which will be on view and later auctioned at the Christie’s, Rui Xu has invited seven exceptional international dancers and choreographer Amy Grubb to manifest this woeful but beautiful story.

Rui Xu’s new commission The Dethroning of Divine Beasts- A Sequel to the Classic of Mountains and Seas, will be shown for Christie’s Lates: Art in Motion, on the 13th May between 6.00pm-8.30pm. The performance will take place from 6.45-7.00pm & 7.45-8.00pm.

www.ruixustudio.com
